Pelvic Stress Fracture

I was just diagnosed with a pelvic stres fracture and am confused about the treatment.
I am on crutches and anticipate being on them until I can walk without pain.
However, I had a stress fracture in my shin once and also in my fibula (by my ankle) and once the initial pain wore off, I was instructed to do non-weight bearing activity– such as biking and swimming.
I like staying active and I think it’s usually harder to get back to activity (and you make yourself prone to further injury) if you stay completely away from activity. But, I’ve been told that since my fracture is in my pelvis, that any motion causes stress to the area.
This makes sense, but my swimming or biking, would I be causing further damage?
It doesn’t make sense to me because the fracture is in my bone and though muscles and ligaments surround the bone, I don’t see how this could be making it worse.
I want it to heal as quickly as it can, but I’d like to be able to gradually get back into some very easy activities, but not if it’s going to potentially make it worse. Any insight or experience with other patients with this injury. For the record, I am a runner, but I don’t run long miles anymore– just around 3.
I cross train, swim, rollerblade, bike and do yoga.
However, I did start playing soccer and tennis again this summer and I’m guessing that’s where my fracture came from.
My butt started hurting and it gradually got worse.
I am a twenty-three year old female.Thanks.Molly
