Pinched nerve and pain.

Long term if a nerve is pinched from a L5-S1 disc protrusion would there be numbness or pain or both? I have read that numbness and pain down the leg are most common. I just every once in a while will have pain down one or the other leg. Not every day though. I just wonder why some days I have the pain and some days I do not. Does it have to do with the compression of the disc depending on what a person does that day and that causes the protrusion to go out further putting more pressure on the nerve? What does a Chiropractor do for a disc protrusion? Can they make it not protrude out as far and how do they do that?

I had all the hardware removed in my back in October 2014 and I have made extreme progress with pain control and mobility. But my buttocks pain is very severe – the periformis muscle and I cannot find out what triggers it. It can go from a 1 pain to a 10 pain overnight – which makes me think this is nerve pain – the periformis muscle impinging on the sciatic nerve. It always acts up with too streneous a day but some days I can just get up and it will be a 10 pain all day and then 1 pain the next day. I am currently working with a physical therapist with deep tissue massage and exercise and pool exercise and electrical stimulation. I am getting better but this buttocks pain is bad and FEELS like nerve pain. I am currently walking 1 mile a day. Am I irritating it further? Have I had enough healing time or could it still be referred from the surgery site? I had a large disk removed in 2012with no fushion and in 2013 had to have hardware put in because the spine was unstable. Then I had the hardware removed in 2014. I am constantly looking for things which can help my hip and I am very motivation. Thank you…
