Sore Throwing Arm

(2 discussions)

I play ball a lot (some would say too much, but who asked them) – sometimes 5 or 6 games a week. I often throw my arm out. I couldn’t find any reference to injuries or pain to the upper arm from over doing it on throwing. I usually ice it after I am done for the evening and rest it a day or two if I really overdo it. What is the best treatment after injury and what recommendations on strengthening the muscles to prevent frequency of injury.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. I tore (?) my supraspinatus five years ago (ironically, it was in a winter season that I decided to try softball instead of baseball) and have had problems ever since. Ice, rest and anti-inflammatories are great for settling down the pain, but you do need to strengthen the shoulder, otherwise you’ll end up like me, with inpingement and tendonitis and god knows what else.
So… I went to see my physio, who showed me some good exercises. Get a theraband, you can normally buy them from a physio pretty cheap. Really, I need to draw pictures to show what the exercises are – my explanations suck. But do take the time to strengthen the rotator cuff, otherwise you’ll come to chronic pain very, very well.

There sure DOESN’T seem to be much on upper arm injuries either here or elsewhere on the internet, but I have seen references to “thrower’s arm” and it sounds like what you are experiencing. Do a google search and you will find a bunch of links.

(I think that it is an overuse injury, but maybe there are excercises to strenthen other muscles around it.)
