Torn Rectus Femoris???

(3 discussions)

Hi…any similar cases out there?

I have seen a sports doctor, a physiotherapist, my family doctor, a message therapist, an orthopedic surgeon and my chiropractor about a thigh injury back in march 2002. I can’t get a straight answer from anyone, as it has been diagnosed as either a full rupture or partial tear of the rectus femoris. It happened kicking a soccer ball in a game and it hurt like hell. I’ve been left with a noticeable dent in my thigh and a large lump below the dent. There was no bruising after it happenened and it’s still tender today. I returned to the soccer field 2.5 months after the injury and can still run and kick and have only noticed a minor strength deficiency…if it’s completely torn, i would be satisfied as i still am quite able to compete. my concern is that it is only a partial tear and that if it completely tears i’d be a write off. Has anyone been diagnosed with a ruptured rectus femoris? if so, what did feel like? what does it look like? and can you still run and be active on a higher level?

Hi Brent. I had a partial tear in my rectus femoris in 1995, so it’s been awhile. I can’t remember a lot, but I’ll give you what I do remember and hoope that it will help. One thing I do remember is that I never had a dent like you described. I’m not sure I had bruising either. I injured mine in softball practice sprinting to first base. I wasn’t able to run, because it hurt so much. My leg felt heavy at times like it was just dead weight. I couldn’t walk up or down stairs because of the pushing and the motion of navigating the stairs. I was sent to a sports doc, who did an initial eval, and then sent me to physio were they did ultrasound massage, heat therapy, many strengthening and stretching exercises, and wrapping of the muscle. I was back playing softball in a short time, I guess about a month.

Many moons ago when I was in high school, I ruptured my right hamstring just below the belly. I had significant bruising (my leg made it into some medical journals at the time), was on crutches because I couldn’t bear weight and spent several months in intense physical therapy. I hurt it sprinting from a dead stop to get a pass while playing lacrosse. Almost 20 years later, I’m fine on that leg. The large lump and dent still are with me and I never regained the same strength in that leg as my uninjured one. However, I’ve run over a dozen marathons and completed 4 Ironmans in the last two years, so I would say you can compete on it once it is healed. Good luck.

    Hi Brent,

I injured my Rectus Femoris in a softball game sprinting to first base.I’ve been left with a noticeable dent in my thigh and a large lump above the dent. There was no bruising after it happenened and it’s not tender at all. It does cramp up when I raise my leg fast or when I run fast. The cramping hinders my activities and I’m afraid of futher injury.

Have learn anything more about this type of injury? If you do let me know.
