back pain/leg numbness

(2 discussions)

I have had xrays, mri, and ct myelogram with contrast of lumbar spine. All tests came out as normal with some arthritic changes in lumbar area. I have pain in my left lower back/hip area. I also have numbness that goes down the outside of my left leg. No nerves are being pinched according to the tests. It is seemed to be thought that I have degenerative disc disease and that this is the cause of the pain. I was wondering if the leg numbness, which they say is ITBS, may be contributing to the back pain somehow.

I am not a doctor, or even a Chiropractor, but since no one else is answering here, Ill leave my opinion. All your tests sound like you are in good shape. Degenerative disc disease should only produce these symptoms if there is nerve involvement. It really doesnt sound like that. Does the outside of the leg one start at the hip and go numb just above the knee? This is called Meralgia Paresthetica, which can be caused (just for example) by being overweight and wearing a tight belt. The nerve involved is in the groin area. You could have a muscular entrapment in this area.A Chiropractor could help, or you could trymassage, and in particular Active Release Technique. The outside of the hip one, in many cases comes from the Psoas muscles. Good luck.

Thanks !! That is exactly what it seems like. The numbness starts at the hip and extends to just above the knee. I have been checking out ITBS and that’s just not sounding like what i’m having. I am overweight and have been for a while. This problem has been getting progressively worse for the past 3 years or so but has just started to get really bothersome. I have just made an appointment with the chiropractor for next week. I’ll mention all this to him. I was just at a loss here and didn’t know what to do. Thanks for responding. 🙂
