possible break or dislocation in knuckle or finger

(2 discussions)

I landed hard on my fist (middle knuckle) after a fall off a porch.
My fist hit hard onto a stepping stone, and now it’s swollen and red.
My middle knuckle is large with soft swelling all around the topside of my hand.
It’s hard to straighten this finger all of the way back out.
I can still work with the hand, but working with it increases the swelling/pain somewhat.
Is there any chance of this healing naturally?
What is the likely prognosis if this goes untreated?

Cliff,Get an X-ray to rule out a fracture. An untreated fracture can lead to a “Non-union” which is when the bone does not heal properly, and can lead to arthritis and chronic range-of-motion problems with that joint. It is not worth taking the risk…see a doctor and get an X-ray: you will feel better, regardless, afterwards. Please let us know the results, and good luck.

Between my first and second finger a painfull swollen area has developed. Gets a little better with rest, but this is difficult. I have asked several doctors what they think it is and they don’t know. It doesn’t seem to be the knuckle but in between them. Anypne heard of this? : Cliff,: Get an X-ray to rule out a fracture.
