UFO: Unidentified Foot Obtrusion

I have a dense mass of cells on the bottom of my foot.
Originally it felt like a callous, but resembled a knot that you would find in a plank of hardwood.
It has recently started protruding from the skin and is growing rather quickly.
What is it, and what can I do to remove it?
Is it contagious?
