Has anybody had a ruptured achillies tendon? I am wondering the timescales involved with rehab and whether you carried on with your sport? Or god forbid you had a re-rupture, too much too soon?

    What did the physio consist of? Was it passive and active stretching, also did you have ultra sound treatment?
    I had a re-rupture 1st week in May even after 6 weeks of physio. They operated this time but the consultant has said no physio for 6 months this time to allow complete healing. As you can imagine I am a little frustrated at the moment having originally ruptured the tendon back in january. As you said its not the physical side, but mentally its a nightmare having had a re-rupture. You have got to be positive and as long it does not stop you getting the cork out of a wine bottle its okay!!

    The manupulation I meant was stretching of the calf, not joint. The equipment you mention sounds interesting, could definately do with something to loosen them up.

    by manipulation do you mean ‘adjusting’ of the joint? in some of the sports med. catalogues i have seen devices to stretch you calves, hard to describe, kind of a platform on a half circle. they look like they are pretty powerful for stretching, could be a solution to the tight calves problem?

    I did my rupture playing netball. I was playing 3 times per week and had been for about 8 years, so was quite fit at the time. I do however have very tight calf muscles having torn them both previously, this can lead to problems with the achiles. No amount of warm up, massage or manipulation seems to make them untight!

    Luckily, I’ve never ruptured my achilles tendon, but I have had recurrent achilles tendonitis.

    As Den said, you’re looking at a minimum of three months of rehad to build back up your strenth to equal that of your uninjured leg. This is essential before continuing with your sport because the tendon my re-rupture! (AHHHH)

    What sport were you playing when the rupture occured? The sport you play as well as your age and activity level can influance your probablility of an achilles tendon rupture. “Weekend-warriors” or middle aged people who don’t do anything all week only to go all out in thier sport during the weekend are at the highest risk. To prevent this, one should stretch your calves and achilles tendon daily. Activities that involve sudden dorsiflexion also increase one’s risk of rupturing an achilles tendon.
