Baseball pitcher's finger injury

Help! My son is a high school pitcher who repeatedly injures his middle finger. He develops blood blisters beneath and above the nail even though he keeps it short, and routinely splits the nail deeply after pitching. Can anyone tell us how to prevent this injury, and how to treat it?
