Can pain in the ball of the foot and arch be caused by a bunion?

(3 discussions)

I fractured a bone in the foot near the big toe, bone/bunion area in the summer of 2012. Since that time, I have been having constant pain in the ball of the foot. The pain often extends to the arch. I have recently returned to the podiatrist.
He xrayed the foot, and told me the fracture was healed.
HE then went on to tell me that the pain I feel is from a bunion. Does that sound a like a possibility? Four about 6 months, I was having a constant feeling as if electricity was going through the foot. That doesn’t happen that often in the past few months. When I Did return to the doctor 2 weeks ago, he told me the foot was swollen. He taped it up, and told me to take Tylenol 4 times a day for a week. A week later I returned for a follow-up visit. The doctor said the swelling went down and did a treatment with the machine that sends electric impulses to the area that hurts.
The pain is the same now,as it was prior to treatment.
Any suggestions or ideas of what is causing the pain? Can it really be caused by a bunion?
Since the pain is in the ball of the foot and radiates to the arch, I wasn’t sure if the pain is really coming from a bunion.
Thanks for your input.E

I’m sorry but you have me confused. Did you initially fracture a sesamoid bone?Generally when a patient tells me they feel electricity in their foot I consider nerve entrapments such as a Morton’s neuroma, Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome. Why don’t you get another opinion?

Since I am a podiatrist, I am going to recommend that you see a podiatrist. We are foot specialists. If you can not find one an orthopedist who specializes in the foot would be ok also. Good luck.
