Ingrown nail sugery – healing and staying in shape

(8 discussions)

Hello. I have made an appointment to see a podiatrist about my ingrown toenails.
When I called the office to see if I could drive to the appointment, go to work the next day, etc….they could give me no answers.
Can you help?
What is involved and how long does it usually take to heal from this surgery?
I am a runner and would like to stay in shape post-op… What excercises can I do while healing?
Thanks!

: I am a runner and would like to stay in shape post-op... What excercises can I do while healing?: Thanks!Denise, ingrown toenail surgery is one of the most common procedures performed in a podiatrist's office. It should not keep you from work the next day (or even later in the day) should you want. Running can be uncomfortable but any other exercise can be done to tolerance. Your toes will be more than glad to tell you that they have had enough!!In our office, the toe is numbed using a local anesthetic (yes, this is an injection). After that, the toe is scrubbed with a Betadine solution. Then the nail or portion of nail is removed. We use a chemical to keep the nail from coming back but there are several different methods. The toe is dressed with a non stick dressing. Post operative instructions include soaking with warm salt water three times a day. We then see you back for a recheck in about three days. If all is going well, a band-aid and antibiotic ointment is all you need. It usually takes about six weeks for all to be healed. Good luck!

Allen,Everyone has different perceptions of pain. Is the procedure painless???? NO. There is discomfort. A very small needle is used to place the anesthestic under the skin. The sensation is similar to an ant bite. The slower the medication is put in the better off you are because the sensory nerves can get numb. After surgery, pain is minimal...especially if your toenail has been hurting prior to surgery. Most people say that it feels better the next day after the surgery. They also laugh that they waited so long to have it done. Good luck to you, Misti

Sara-marie, I hope that you have read the previous posts regarding ingrown nail surgeries. I am not sure what netball is. Is it similar to volley ball here in the US? The days following surgery there will be some discomfort. IF someone steps on your toe, yes it will hurt. Normal, everyday activities should be OK. Good luck,Misti
