Mystery Knee Injury

(3 discussions)

I have pain in the outer left knee, sometimes pain radiating up the outer hamstring and sometimes down the calf. It is almost a numbness. It gets stiff more so then locked up. It feels best after self massage and warm moist heat. I had a twisting/falling injury a year ago and the MRI only showed a slight MEDIAL meniscus tear…but that’s not where it hurts! Does this sound familiar to anybody? Please help! I have been in pain a whole year and the only thing the doctor says is “get over it”.

In all honesty, a physical therapist would be far better choice intially. They will first rule out any major problems. They will be able to carefully analyze your movements and look at the alignment of your joints. Then they will be able to correct any mechanical problems and give you exercises to help prevent a recurrence.

That makes sense, as I thought my hip was out of whack because of my knee. Would physical therapy detect this or do I need to go back to the doctor?

Based on your description of your symptoms, it almost sounds like you might have some kind of back or hip pathology that is radiating into the knee.
