Over Pronation

I have been told by my doctor that I have slightly flat feet.
I play tennis twice a week and have done for the past 10 years.
Over the last 18 months I have probably gained another 1.5 stones.
So in all I am now 3 stone over my recommended weight.
I had no problem with my feet up until 18 months ago, but now when I do play tennis, or go for a long walk or am on my feet for hours at a time my feet ache and feel very stiff, especially for the first 10 minutes when I get up in the morning they take tiime to ‘settle in’ before I can walk properly.
My main question is would I have always had flat feet but am not feeling the problems until now because of my excess weight?
If I did lose 3 stone is it possible that I wouldn’t have these problems anymore, or will I always have flat feet now?
I really want to carry on being active, is this OK?

evil heels & numb toes

i’ve just started a new job which requires me to wear high heels. i’m completely unaccustomed to them, and my feet hurt like hell for the 7 hours a day that I have to wear them. luckily this job is only for 3 days a week. it’s been 4 days since I last wore the shoes and the toes on my right foot are still pretty numb. the numbness makes me feel like i’m constantly walking on a bumpy surface. is this going to go away at some point? can 3 days a week do major damage to my feet/back/etc? I ask because I cannot afford to quit this job. is it just a matter of getting used to the shoes?
thanks for your time.r.c.

Sudden rigid tendon in toe

This past year there have been at least 5 instances when my 2nd toe would suddenly “contract” and I could feel the tendon throughout the foot and toe get extremely tight.
It was very painful and my toe looked ‘bone’ straight–almost as the the toe was trying to arch the other way.
A couple times this happened after I put an odd amount of pressure on a certain part of the bottom of my foot.
Just last night, however, I was laying in bed and this happened with my big toe.
The entire toe tensed up and was perfectly straight–the joint was contracting downward.
This caused great amounts of pain through even my lower ankle area.
I looked up info on it, and nothing seems to fit my random occuring symptoms.
I thought I would see if anyone had any ideas, though.
Thanks.

Getting a degree in chiropractic medicine

Hi, my name is Sheila Lonczak and I am a freshman at Northeastern University majoring in Athletic Training. My intent is to get my degree in AT but then go on to grad school and become a chiropractor. Is majoring in AT a good idea? Will I have studied what I needed to study in order to go to grad school and do as I wish? And if so, what are your recommedations for good chiropractic schools in the northeast? Thank you very much for your time. I look forward to hearing back from you.

1st metatarsal pain

after falling down the stairs, I have a lot of pain on the inside of my left foot and along the top.
My family Dr just called and said the x-rays do not show a fracture but show a 1st Metarsal sprain.
He told me that time will heal it.
Every day it hurts worse.
What is a 1st Metatarsal sprain?
I can’t find any information anywhere.
The injury occurred 2 1/2 weeks ago.

Dr. Abrams – I recently thought I had a callus/dry skin on the bottom of my big toe.
It is a little sore, and now there is a brown spot under the skin.
Any idea what it could be or how I could treat it?
Thank you for your help.

periodic swelling and then bruising on bottom of feet

About 2 to 4 times a year, I’ll get a swelling underneath either foot on the pads (not heel pads).
I will experience some numbness in 1 or 2 toes when this happens.
A day or two later, the swelling will go away but half of my foot will be bruised.
There is never any pains with this.
Is this something to be concerned about.
I do not where constricting shoes and rarely wear heels.

swelling around fully recoverd ankle fracture

(2 discussions)

Hello Dr.A, I need to know what type of exercises I can do to prevent further swelling around my ankle.
I have also been using ice packs and cooling gels for such an injury and have been doing a number of flexing and stretching exercises daily.
It’s only been a week since the cast I had on for five weeks was removed.Maybe it’s a little premature to think that the healing process will be swift, but I need to know what I can do to feel less pain and to feel more comfortable when I stand or walk.
Iam also a musician(drummer)who works from the middleto the end of the week and I want to know if using afoot pedal will increase or prolong my recovery.
I look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you,
Bob Demelo
