Recurring occasional pain in right big toe

When I was about 18 (I am now 25) I started having occasional pain in my big toe.
It is a sharp but not particularly strong pain, and it never was bad enough or lasted long enough to really concern me.
It lasts about 5 days and then goes away, sometimes for months, or even a year at a time.
Two days ago the pain came back and is worse than before, and yesterday it actually had me limping for a moment.
It hurts the worst when I am walking, but there is a slightly dull ache when sitting down as well.
I’m thinking it’s time I went to see a doctor about this because I am an avid backpacker and am afraid this could interrupt a good hike some day.
I have been reading about arthritis in the big toe and wonder if my condition could be related to it.
Thanks so much for your help.

Sweat contains fatty acids that the bacteria on the skin break down. This causes the odor. This can vary due to the type of shoes (Leather uppers are better,Synthetic materials are the worst)type of hosiery, weather etc. Various strengths of antiperpirants are often used, starting from (but not exclusively) Mitchum Roll-On, Certain-Dri (12% Aluminum Chloride solution) and RX Drysol (20% Aluminum chloride)Washing the feet daily, wearing socks made with Cool Max (cotton is not so great as everyone thinks and nylon is worse).
