What did i just do to my neck??

(4 discussions)

I was sitting at my desk stretching then not even thinking i had my right hand on the top of my head and twisted my neck to the left and down a bit and i had a INTENSE tingleing sensation/pain that went from the left side of my neck all the way up to the top of the left side of my head. My right side was completely uneffected. I jumped out of my seat and kneeled down then layed on my bed and then it started to fade away. It lasted less than a couple minutes… My neck never popped and i didn’t twist it much. Anyone know what i did to it?

Hmm i think your right, i have recently started lifting weights again and that might of caused my muscles to tighten up.. i searched this site and found this info about it.
Is it that serious? I should rest, get a neck collar, and go to a sports injury specialist, rehibilitation, medication!? I feel fine now, i dont really need that nerve do i?

    Pain in the neck!

Pain in the neck which radiates to other areas is usually a result of nerves being trapped. The cause of the trapped nerve can be tight muscles, disc damage, or formation of bony deposits.

    Symptoms are:

Deep pain in the neck which radiates into the shoulder, arms or fingers.
Pain radiating up the neck into the head.
Pain in the neck causing dizziness or headaches.
    What can you do?

    Rest.
Wear a neck collar to allow muscles to recover.
See a sports injury professional who can advise on rehabilitation, mobility and strengthening.
What can a sports injury specialist or doctor do?

    Determine the cause of pain.
    Prescribe anti-inflammatory medication.
Use sports massage techniques to relax muscles.
    Apply traction.
Prescribe and monitor a rehabilitation programme.

What activities have caused the stiffening? I would recommend a massage therapist to ease those tight afending muscles. Otherwise they will continue doing what they do so well, mainly being dysfunctional and causing pain, and giving you a hard time.
Focus more on stretching and overall relaxation. Especially the shoulder, neck, and pecs.

After a stiffening of the muscles on the right side of my neck/shoulder I have also been left with a pain + tingling radiating down my right side to the 1st 2nd fingers and partcularly within the bicep region but with no appreciable loss of strength. This is the second occurrence within 6 months and a neck x-ray showed signs of a narrowing of the vertebra but did not indicate arthritis.

This condition can take up to a month or more to clear with the tingling sensation in the 1st finger the last symptom to remain. NSAIDs snd manipulation do not seem to speed up recovery.

Is it safe to do calisthenics during this period? I am loathed to lose conditioning and the initial muscle spasm does not seem to relate directly to my training regime.
