fifth metatarsal

I have had a small bump on the 5th meta for many years. I am told it is probably the result of a fracture I was unaware of. I put my feet into new ski boots last winter and the pain came on. It is aggravated by running and now I seem to have some pain lots of the time. My doc recommends surgery for removal of the bony lump but warns of complications due to the major tendon nearby. Is this surgery wise or should I adapt my footwear to accommodate the lump and monitor the pain? What’s the name of this cond.?
