Fracture of the heel
Hi,
I fell down the stairs over 2 weeks ago and now have a fracture of the left calcaneal (heel) as well as a normal fracture at the base of my 2nd metatarsal on the right foot!
It is the heel that I’m concerned with.
The surgeon advised the pros & cons of surgery, bone infection, not healing properly etc and I opted out due to too many risks for little gain.
I now have to non-weight bare for 2 months and then partially weight bare for the 3rd month.
All I can do is keep trying to move my foot up and down and from side to side.
The surgeon & consultant have stressed to me that it is a serious injury and my foot will never be normal again and with or without having surgery now, the chances of having to have a fusion op within 3 to 5 yrs is high.
I was intending to train as a Midwife in a year or 2 but this doesn’t seem likely with what I have researched on these kind of injuries as being on my feet a lot, although I have had no clear cut answers from anyone about the long-term future as yet.
Any ideas on the long term condition of this injury…anyone?
Thanks in advanceTina

Your doctors have been very honest and truthful with you. This is not a fracture that you will forget. Having said that, there are different types of fractures and they are classified by name and type. There is a different prognosis for different types.
