plantar faciitis

(6 discussions)

Since Sept. 2013 I have been plagued with this plantar facitis heel pain.
I have gone to a podiatrist, and now a orthopedist.
I have PT twice a week for the past 3 weeks, do all kinds of exercises and to date have very little relief, if any.
Is there any hope for curing this pain?

I injured mine a couple of years ago. I didn’t get any doctor treatment but stretched a lot especially in the mornings. I tore the flicitis in my foot later in a half marathon. I went to a podiatrist and he gave me cortizone pills. I was able to walk ok but still in alot of pain. He started cortizone and steroid shots after about a month. They really helped, I had a total of three (one every other week). It would hurt for a day or two but got a little better each time. The podiatrist also prescribed custom orthodics. I had them made and wear them to run and walk. I am now pain free and only occasionally get a little sore.

I had the same problem for several years before I found some help. I used two items;1. Use a golf ball and roll it aournd under your foot. I can be painfull at first, but use light presure. The tendons will stretch after a few minutes and it gives some pain relief.2. There are some foot raps with velcro that run around the foot and help hold the arch up. I wore them for six months and the pain finally went away. I found mine at the “good feet store”, but have seen them elsewhere. They were about $12 apiece. It took awhile, but I am now back to walking the golf course carrying my bag.Hope this helps.

This is basically your tendons tightening up overnight and hurting during the day as they get overstretched and inflamed.Mine went through the following progressive treatment steps…1. rest2. Cortisone shots (temporary, but complete relief)3. ORthotic inserts in my shoes. Cut the pain by around 75%.3. NIght splints (funky boot like things which keep your achiles and bottom of foot tendons stretched out at night, so healing occurs in a stretched position, rather than a tightened position) Cut the pain down to a mere 5% of previous. (only hurts at the end of the week or if I’ve had to wear dress shoes)5. Cox2 inhibitor – “Bextra” – basically a cortisone like substance which targets specific types of pain and does not tear up your insides as badly as continuous use of cortisone does. The next step is surgury to artificially elongate the tendons. I’m trying to put that off as long as possible. Good luck with YOUR feet.

The AForce night splint is probably the least bulky and easy to wear at night.

It took a long time for you to develop plantar faciitis and with the stretching exercises it may take a while to get rid of the heel pain. This has helped me – the stretching exercises. Especially when I would wake up in the morning and have heel pain. Sometimes I would want to jump out of bed without thinking of stretching the heel first. The night splint helped but was a little hard to get use to sleeping with. The quag heel supports were the best deal seemed to help a lot. Good luck. It sounds like you have plenty of help with the doctor and PT visits.
