Leg/Knee Pain

3 weeks ago I strained some muscles in my leg. The pain was initially in my hip but also spread down my leg. Now the pain is most acutely in my knee with a numb feeling down my calf. The pain is tolerable during the day but in bed the pain in my knee becomes severe and prevents me from sleeping. My GP just recommends rest but after 3 weeks there is little improvement.
Any advice gratefully received, particularly any exercises or help in sleeping.

What happened? Numbness means nerve compression due to spasming muscles. Do you have any pain or limited rom while moving your leg about? Can you do a squat, or standand bring your leg up close to your belly?
Check out the piriformis muscle in your butt. it lies just above the siatic nerve, and if this muscle spasms because of some trauma then it can give you a world of hurt. You would need to go see a massage therapist to try to relax the muscle so that it is no longer compressing on the nerve, if this is the case.
