Pain in thigh when running/cycling uphill and fast

For the last 4 months I have this severe pain at the front of thigh which I only feel when I running/cycling uphill or going faster. It sometimes starts with a tight feeling at the back of my leg, but not always. The exact location of the pain is difficult to describe. The physio told me to stretch my hamstrings and strenghten my gluts, but that hasn’t worked. Three weeks rest initially made it worse. I can jog for miles but feel every little increase in speed or gradient. As soon as I slow down or go downhill the pain dissapears.
Please help ! Thanks.

Try to see if you can reproduce an increase of pain while doing resisted contractions, to try to identify a specific muscle . First lying face down, bend your knee, so that it is at a ninety degree angle. Have someone hold your ankle, so that you can’t move it, and try to straighten your leg. Does that reproduce pain? Another one you can do, is lye face up on your back, bend your knee slightly, have someone hold just above your knee so you get resistance, as you try to bring your knee to your chest, but your leg will not be allowed to move. Dows that reproduce or increase some pain? If both actions cause pain, is the pain different? If they don’t cause pain, um, try stretching your anterior thigh, the quads and a couple of others. make sure to warm them first, with a hot bath, using your palm or forearm to compress into them for a good five minutes at least. Stretch quads by standing up and making sure to stick your groin out slightly to increase the stretch, and bring that leg up and hold it close to your butt, don’t use the opposite hand, use your left hand for your left leg. Make sure that the muscles are warmed up and hold the stretch for a good 10 seconds. Repeat a few times.
