Big Toenail Ripped Off

My fiance was moving our coffee table the night before last and caught the nail on my big toe.
It has ripped off.
I think it is completely gone, but it may still be attached right at the base of the nail.
It is incredibly painful.
What should I do about it?
I’ve read several different suggestions online – some say wrap it with tape, some say remove the nail and soak your foot with water and mild soap, some say soak with salt water – what can be done?
