Disabling Sciatica Pain from Piriformis Syndrome

(2 discussions)

For two years I have had piriformis syndrome. I have sciatica pain in both hips that comes from the muscles cramping and swelling. Standing and walking have become difficult. My doctors and therapists have done everything this site recommends and I am still very restricted by this problem. Has anyone had this problem and managed to get control of it? Thanks for any help.

    Dear Chriodoc,
Could you please be more specific about what types of exercises to do for the periformis muscle. What should be done, how many, etc. I have been suffering with this same thing since May. I go to P.T., do yoga stretches, and the yoga ball, but nothing really helps. I would like to know what I should be doing so that I can maybe run again. Thanks!

Have you tried antagonist strengthening? Meaning, try strengthening the internal rotators of your hip and upper leg. By doing this you cause concentric stretching of the piriformis. This may allow the muscle to lengthen and relieve pressure from the sciatic nerve. Many of my patients are taught to perform exercises on the muscles opposite of the injured site.
