Snapping Hip Syndrome??
Hi,
I’ve been running track since February and have recently gotten over three month long bout with shin splints. However, within the past three weeks I’ve devloped a lot of pain in my hips. My left leg, which is my inside leg when I run on the track, seems to be the worst. I’ve also noticed that when I do leg lifts this hip will painlessly pop out of its socket and go back in on its own. On Tuesday I was running and my left hip completely dislocated! I had to pop it back in and it hurt A LOT.
Anyhow, I went to my sports med doctor yesterday and he said I have snapping hip syndorme or hip snapping syndorme or something like that which I had never heard of before. He said it was caused because I’ve been taping my arches to get rid of my shin splints and that changed the biomechanics for the muscles of my hip. To correct the muscle imbalances he gave me some stretches to do three times a day along with the ones I’m already doing for my shin splints(ugh!) and told me to go a week without running.
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this condition or has suffered from anything like I am describing. I’m not completely convinced that my diagnosis is correct because the problem seems to be more with the hip joint itself than the muscles around my hip.
Any ideas! Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks!
I guess I should go back to see exactly what is causing my problem–it sounds like it potentially be a lot of things! As far as when the popping and pain occurs, I’d have to say its mostly when I bring my leg forwards when I run.
Anyhow, I really appreciate your help!

hey runnergirl,
snapping hip is typically a benign condition, however in your case it sounds like its causing some problems. the condition is usually helped by the stretches the doc likely gave you, but shows good (mabey even better) response to strengthening as well.
there are a few different kinds of snapping hip syndrome. anterior (internal) is when the psoas tendon snapps over the lesser trochanter of the femur, lateral (external) when the itb snapps over the greater trochanter, posterior (dont know any other names) when the biceps femoris tendon snaps over the ischial tub. (ive never seen this) or intra articular (rare) when there is a loose body inside the joint. the snapping syndrome can cause a suction inside the joint leading to a popping more that a snap (like cracking your knuckles) which sounds like what your describing as the hip popping out. the different types of the syndrome can be differentiated by what type of movement causes the snapping (ie comming from flexion and moving into extension) are you aware of when this occurs? best thing to do is the stretches, hard to say what strengthening you should try without knowing whats causing the snapping. with as much running as your doing and the high amount of injuries your sustaining, you should look into some orthotics (good ones) that could be the root of some of your trouble.
anyway, thats all i know about snapping hip, and then some.
hope the stretches help!
