Hammertoe

I have severe hammertoe–still flexible–in the 2nd toe of my right foot. Most of the pain, which has become disabling, is from the collapsed metatarsal. Surgery has been recommended, as I have tried a number of different mechanical interventions (full-size orthopedic insert, a pad for raising the metatarsal–which helps, but not enough). However, I would like to avoid the surgery if possible. A friend suggested consulting a chiropractor to work with straightening the toe and lengthening the tendon. What do you think of this approach? Do you know of any other approach that would allow me to avoid surgery?
Thank you.
