Impossible to stretch due to lower thigh/above knee pain

(2 discussions)

All of a sudden I cannot crouch or do two of my warm up exercises for running – the ones that stretch the quads – because of a sharp muscular pain just above the knee. Doesn’t hurt unless I try to stretch, and I have run on it successfully without pain. First noticed it when trying to crouch down to pat small dog and pain prevented me from going all the way down. Feels a bit stiff after sitting for a while, but in general I can walk around OK but am worried that I cannot stretch properly and may damage something else soon! Any ideas?

Sounds like very tight quads, pulling on the quads expansion which feeds into the patella tendon and inserts below the knee. You must keep stretching…sports massge will help, your therapist will be able to stretch the muscle much more deeply than you yourself will be able to. Of course you’ll feel like you can’t stretch as you used to but persevere, the muscle won’t lengthen unless you encourage it.
