Injured 4 weeks before marathon – please help!
(2 discussions)
I’ve had a problem with my left shin for around 3 days now – there is a sore point near the top of the left shin bone – around one inch below and to the right of the knee cap. It is sore to touch and my leg hurts when walking up and down stairs. I can walk normally but cannot run. The pain just appeared when walking down a stairs – I had run a hill race the evening before but did not feel any pain after the race.
I’ve been training for Stockholm marathon (4 weeks from now!). Seems like a shin splint – Any advice on what it is or how best to treat it?

Thanks for the reply!
I’ve rested for four days and have been applying ice to the injured area. I’ve also used a gel with ketoprofen on the shin. The pain has begun to subside – so hopefully it will clear up in another day or two.
The rest and ice recipe seems to be working!

Judging by the fact that you’re experiencing pain in one localized area and you’re probably doing some pretty high milage, I’d suspect that you might have a stress fracture. I’ve had three from running, all of which have been on my shins. I would recommend that you go see you’re doctor to get a proper diagnosis. He/she will probably do a x-ray (mine always did), however this isn’t always an accurate method of diagnosis because stress fractures don’t show up on an x-ray until 2-3 weeks into the healing process.
As for now, I’d recommend that you stop running and do some sort of cross-training such as swimming or biking. It may be that your problem is not a stress fracture and you can resume your training for the marathon. However, if it is a stress fracture, from experience, I’d strongly recommend that you not run until it is completely healed (about 6 weeks).
I hope this helps!
