Orthotics for shin pain

(4 discussions)

I have had shin pain in the past and have some custom made orthotics which I have been using for about five months now. I believe that these may be causing a problem in my bum and have had pain around the top and sides of the pelvis. I have tried all sorts of stretching and have seen a physio who gave me Pilates exercises. Has anyone else experienced this type of pain from orthotics or wearing running shoes designed for overpronation?

For anyone else with a similar problem. I went to a different podiatrist who explained that the level of arch support on the orthotics was too great. when the orthotic was pushed onto the foot there was no movement left on the big toes as it locked them up. This is obviously not good. I am going to get some new orthotics made but have been told because of my biomechanics that if a balance cannot be found between support for the arch to avoid the shin pain and the movement in the big toe then I may have to accept I am not built for running. Trying not to think about this possibility yet as it is pretty upsetting. There is always cycling though.

    hey, darren_bailey
the problem with orthotics is that it takes some time to accomodate to them, stress is taken off certain structures and shared with others, essentially ‘retraining’ the mechanics of you lower extremity. if however you dont wear them continuously then you can never accomodate, and problems will arise. try wearing them all the time for a couple weeks, so your feet fully aclimatize, if that doesnt help then scrap em and go back to the people that made them!

Thank you Fox for your response.

The pain started with some shoes for overpronators which I ditched and then it went away. The pain then came again with the orthotics and I was very careful to break my legs in with them. I do however only wear them in my running shoes which also used in the gym but no corrective orthotics in other shoes which I wear.

    hi,
ive put quite a few people in orthotics, and have only heard complaints like your having during the break in period. do you wear them in all your shoes, or just your running shoes? if your switching back and forth, that would cause a problem. If the pain started around the same time as the orthotics, it could be that they were casted wrong or are over correcting. i would say go back to the guys that made them, and let them know, if it is the orthotics, then they should fix them for free!
