Osgood-Schlatters Disease

(13 discussions)

My 12 year old son has been diagnosed with the above becasue he has a hard swelling just below his right knee. The large oval shape swelling/lump is hard and painful when touched or after playing sport, often making him limp, but he is not experiencing actual knee pain. He has not knocked the area to encourage the swelling.
I was not aware that this disease is associated with swellings/lumps and am concerned the diagnosis may be incorrect. My question is therefore, can osgood-slatters disease develop as painful lumps/swellings rather than painful knees? If not, what could the swelling be?

My son Sam was also diagnosed w/ this problem when he was 11. We were told by Dr. William Clancy of the renowned HealthSouth & Alabama Sports Medicime in Birmingham, Al that the cause was from the bone growing at a faster pace than the tendon. My son is a star athlete in baseball and football and now 16. He advised us to ice the area after workouts and physical activity and take an anti-inflamatory (ibuprofen), but mainly rest during off season. Sam followed his advice and after about 18 mths didn’t have a problem with the pain anymore. Maybe the tendon caught up 🙂 who knows? We do have adult friends that had this as a child and have knots on their knees as a result of not seeking medical attention in their youth. Surgery can remove them but they say it’s not worth it. As an after-thought, Dr. Clancy did order a MRI of the area because he said in about 1% of these cases what appears to be a calcification is actually a tumor and the risk of that is not worth not doing an MRI to be sure. Hope this helped. God bless you.

My son is a big rugby fan and has Osgood-schlatters Disease in both knees. We have been advised that he should stop sport but he is having none of it. We have been advised that if he should carry on he should stretch properly before training but we are not sure how this should be done. If you have any advised on the best way to stretch or what might help him to keep the pain to a minimal. Thank you

I had this when I was 13. I played soccer and it made it hard to push the ball forward let alone kick it. There was nothing that could really be done about it. I iced it after playing and just toughed it out. Don’t be scared that it’s going to stick around forever or cause other problems… it peaked in pain about 2 months after it started, then gradually went away, probably another 4 or 5 months. Other than making you a little bit tougher.. there’s no side effects from it. You’ll be alright.

I have had this since I was 12 and I am now 24, it still gives me problems from time to time as it was never really treated and has never gone back to being “normal”I have done some reading on this, and it seems there is some new treatment out which includes Vitamen suppliments to help the body repair itself, you may want to do an internet search, and learn more about it yourself to see what would be best for you.1 thing I would like to say as a sports coach though is that you need to be careful not to over exercise, that is 1 of the factors of how this injury occurs (over use injury).
Be sure to get plenty of rest, you need to remember that your still growing, and putting too much pressure or repeted pressure through your joints can be quite harmful.

I am 10 years old, I have been diagnosed with OSD. I have a very active sports live & have been told by my GP to discontinue my sports (netball, tennis, karate & athletics) for the next 2 years but must come in for half yearly xrays & check ups. Can I still continue to swim?

Do you always have to have painful lumps/swellings because I just got diagnosed with Osgood-Slatters today but there is not a large lump or swelling but it is still really sore.

hi I was diagnosed with OSD when I was 12 by my gp I was told to give football up or I could end up in a wheelchair so I did I am now 26 I suffer from it in both knees my left one being the worse it mainly troubles me if I was to kneel down for more 20 than seconds untill now I didn’t realise there was suppliments for the treatment as I havnt followed up on it for over 10 years so hopefully this will help as it makes your life harderto cope with.

I was diagnosed with osd when I was 13, I am now 15. I thought I did all the right things (no excercise, stretches etc.)but now I have hard lumps just under both knees. They both really hurt when they get hit with something, when I kneel or bend at the knees and when I excercise (long distance running, soccer and rowing). Is there anything I can do to make the lumps go away? And how can I stop it from hurting?
