fractured heel

(4 discussions)

been in cast, bed and wheelchair for first week.
can’tdo the crutches as I have cerebral palsy (but normallyam able to walk) doc gave me vicodin but the problem isrelentless spasticity in foot. I normally take no rx drugs, but thinking in this case maybe some muscle relaxers? I triedwine and light beer which worked for about 30 minutes, but I doubt I should just drink all day.
as it is, people mistake me for drunkeness already with the cp. I am afraid the spasms are preventing healing or even making things worse.
could it be?
it’s driving me crazy.
and I suspect it’s a long road ahead. Thank you.

need to know if foot may be broken

(3 discussions)

i was participating in a high school basketball tourney, when I was shooting a jumpshot and came down on with all my weight on it. shortly after, there was a spot just below my ankle adn a little towards the front of my foot that swelled up like a golf ball. the next day, I noticed some swelling at the top of my foot as well. I cna barely walk on it and applied pressure is out of the question. are there ways of telling if it is broken w/o an x-ray.

fourth toe, right foot, with blister , dark skin and pain

(5 discussions)

Dear Doctor. My mother is 82 years old. Between 3 and 4 months ago, she developed a pain in her fourth toe, right foot. Two months ago I took her to a dermathologist, the dermathologist removed a bunion on the fifth toe. It seeemed that the bunion pressed the fourth toe. In another clinic the doctor said that she needed surgery to remove a bone growth that caused the problem. At least since two months ago, she developed a big blister between the fourth and fifth toe, with liquid oozing and bad smell. A doctor recommended sulphas application. One month ago I took her to a traumatologist who took an x-ray and said there was no justification for surgery because there was no bone growth. Traumatologist said she has claw-toes and advised to clear an insole and if it did not allevaiate the problem, to return for a special contraption to be designed for her foot. Another doctor examined her a week ago and said that she has fungus and provided an anti-micotic cream. I asked my mother to stay without shoes for several hours a day and apply sulphas and the anti-micotic cream, the blister started to close, liquid stopped oozing and no more bad smell. It seems that it is is not completely closed, but at least it is better than two weeks ago. Important point, all the time she has a slightly darker colour in her fourth toe, than the rest of the foot.
Six years ago she underwent radical mastectomy on one breast.
For several years she has seen her right foot kind of enlarged at the ankle, it has been repeatedly indicated by several doctors that there is poor blood circulation in her foot. What is most frustrating for me, after consulting dermathologist, traumatologist, internal medicine specialists, that there is no clear cut diagnosis. I am thinking of taking her to a podiatrist. Kindly advise. Thank you Doctor.

Haglund’s Deformity

My 14 year old daughter has been diagnosed as having this condition. She never complained before and it seems to be associated with wearing footwear for sports.
There are a few questions I have. If this is a permanent and chronic condition, why not get the bone growth surgically removed rather than mess with inserts and such for the rest of her life? Next, do you know if this condition is associated with any other syndromes? Are people who are prone to this, prone to any other conditions we could watch out for?
Thank you.

Concerned about healing of 5th metatarsal

(2 discussions)

Dr. Abrahms:I fractured my L. 5th metatarsal on Dec. 13th by inverting my ankle sharply causing a “pop” in my foot. According to my Orthopedic Dr., it is classified as “benign”.
Looking at the X-Rays, you cannot noticed anything on the A-P view however, on the lateral view a slight fracture line with what seems to look like a small chip off the bone was presented at the base right near the cuboid. The Dr. opted not to put a cast on but his orders were to Ace wrap it for one week while wearing a post-op shoe, then just to wear a substantial sock (thorlo-like) with the boot.
I was instructed to use my crutches and bear weight as tolerated for three weeks.
My appt. is tomorrow: (1/8/04).
What my concerns are:There is a sideways pertrusion of the exact area of fracture resembling a bunion that has been appararent since the time of injury.
It has gone done in size slightly (approximately 25%) as of today. It is tender to the touch, but not painful.
I also still have some bruising up by my 2nd & 3rd metatarsal ends. I feel a click as I try to wiggle my toes up and down.
When I wrapped my foot, this area felt like pins and needles when I tried to wiggle my toes in that fashion.
My use of cruthes has quite franckly been poor.
I’ve been hobbling around on my injured foot (slowly), bearing weight on the inside of my foot to avoid any pain.
If I try to walk in a normal fashion, my foot’s function in the process feels disoriented and still unstable.
I am unable to put an equal distribution of weight on both feet w/o feeling pain in my injured foot. Are there any concerns or questions you feel I should raise to my Dr. tomorrow?
Thank you.~Angela

hammertoe

(3 discussions)

I was diagnosed with hammertoe in 2011.
I have seen several doctors since and all, with the exception, being a representative of the Veterans Administration, did not diagnose the hammertoe.
He states “There was not evidence of hammertoe.” “The diagnosis is that there was not pathology today to render a diagnosis.”Can hammertoe, once diagnosed, disappear without the proper treatment?
