Intercostal muscle injuries

(4 discussions)

Hi All,

Yesterday, I was diagnosed with a left-side intercostal muscle injury. The doctor wasn’t sure whether it was purely a muscle problem, or if it was some kind of ligament damage as well. He recommended that I carry on my life as normal, and that things should be back to normal within 6 to 8 weeks

Has anyone any experience of this kind of injury?

I’m an early 30’s racing driver. The pain isn’t that bad really unless I reach for something heavy, stand up, sit down, try to sleep, or take deep breaths

I generally don’t take pain meds. I had some in the hospital though immediately after the accident. Other than that, I’m now on a course of anti-inflammatories. I’ve got about 4 or 5 days to go on them…

I still haven’t got any bruising, just tenderness when I touch it, and pain (although it’s not as bad as last week) when I do something too strenuous

    daztheracer,

Usually a traumatic injury to the ribs would be painful very soon after the trauma was sustained. Especially, an injury that would displace the costals enough to cause ligament damage.

Were you taking any pain meds right after the crash that might have masked the pain?

Do you have point tenderness or bruising at the injury site?

Do you have any other symptoms?

Not sure, but we were in a 50mph car crash on the 2nd Jan…

It’s possible that I hit my ribs on my partners elbow when the car suddenly stopped. (She has a broken elbow) My pain didn’t start till about 5 days later, then I just assumed it was just a bit of a delayed muscle strain. But it got worse over the next couple of days to the point where I couldn’t sleep. That’s when I went to the hospital…

    daztheracer,

Do you recall what caused the injury?
