Knee injury after hiking

(2 discussions)

Hi.

I have pain in my knee.

It happened shortly after a hike, so I think the hike might be the cause.

The pain is there all the time. It goes away when I apply ice, but returns afterwards. Applying pressure on the knee, for example in walking or running, makes the pain worse.

The pain is in the lower left part of my right knee. Strange thing is that sometimes the pain moves around.

I tried the virtual therapist but am still not sure what pain I have.

Thanks.

For months I stopped hiking and exercise. I always took the elevator and drove to work.

    Ice didn’t work.

Eventually I bought a knee brace and this provided me much relief. I started walking up stairs, walking to work. But the pain came back after a while. I think my job as a computer programmer sitting all day with my knees bent made things worse.

Then one day when the weather was good I put on my knee brace and went hiking. The weather was too good to resist. Went to Mount Tam, which is an intermediate hike. Next day my knee was completely better like magic! After a while the pain came back, but it was much less.

Now I go hiking, kayaking, rafting as often as I can. I found out my problem is probably a weak knee. When going downhill on a steep incline my knee hurts. This happens even on the steep hills of San Francisco. I should wear a knee brace when going downhill, but I don’t need it for the uphill.

One thing I want to try is knee exercises to strengthen my knee. I want to try to two usual gym exercises — the one where you lift up, and the other where you push down.

Now note. I took this all at my own risk. It might not work for you. If you want to try it, take baby steps. Buy a knee brace, then add some exercise, then some more.

    Hope this helps.

Your problem sounds similar to mine – after a 4-day hike 5 months ago I developed pain in my right knee, first diagnosed as tendonitis, but after 3 months on rest and nurofen the doctor said he wasn’t sure…. The pain comes and goes, not only after walking or other exercise but also for no apparent reason. It also moves around different areas inside and round my knee.

Have you had any luck getting your problem diagnosed or cured? I am on a 4mth waiting list for an orthopaedic surgeon!

    Thanks
