I recently had severe lower back trauma during a basketball game. I was undercut while in the air and landed right on my lower back. X-Rays were negative but it is extremely painful and i can barely walk without a lot of pain. I was wondering if i will have long term back problems from this and how soon i will be able to return to playing basketball. thanks.

At one week out, rest is probably warranted… How did your Dr. make the ligament damage diagnosis? Where do you feel the pain? Does the pain radiate into your legs? Do you have any numbness or any other neurological symptoms? Do you do sit ups or other abdominal exercises regularly? Hamstring flexibility?

Lots of important questions to answer before any exercises should be recommended. Take your time and understand your injury to prevent re-injury.

DO you lean over to one side during the back spasms, if so it may be damage to the cartldidge between your disks, you will need an x ray to confirm this, if this is the problem you will need an operation in which the discs are fused together, alternativley you can have fluid injeted into the disks which will help the glide more easily during movement, this is a costly procedure and you will need to check that your insurance does cover it

    Hi

I fractured a bone in my back so no what it is like to have a weakness, basically I have had to restrengthen everything. Good Hamstrings and quads will help then work on lower back stretching and strengthening, try pilates or adapt the exercise to suit you.

    Good luck

I had a badly strained lower back muscle. I found that basic stretching helped for a few minutes, but for the one year of severe pain I had, nothing ever helped for more than a couple of hours.

I had a back op 3 years ago but before that I found the back spasms worse than anything else.
I found lying down on a mat and gently rocking my knees into my chest helped. Good luck
