Shoulder injury

My son took a hard slide tackle from behind the other day. He did a tuck and roll but came down hard on his left shoulder. Initially he had some tingling in his arm and neck that subsided within an hour but he is still has pain extending from the lower part of his neck down across, and to the bottom, of his scapula. He no longer has any numbness or tingling but still hurts. He also has limited vertical movement of the arm but this is due more to the pain than any physical impairment.
Anti-inflammatories do help.
Best guess, is this muscle damage or tear and is rest and anti-inflams the best bet?

It sounds like your son may have a brachial plexis injury. Often called a burner or a stinger, it occurs when the group of nerves that run from the neck to the shoulder are injured. The most common mechanisms are the stretch and compression type injuries. He needs to be under the care of an orthopedic surgeon. Although relatively minor this is the type of injury that can reoccur easily if the initial injury was not treated properly.
