uneven hips

(7 discussions)

I’ve just recently noticed that my hips are uneven causing my left leg to appear longer than my right.
This tends to cause tightness in my lower back and occasional sliding/popping of my sacrum. Could this be the cause of hyperextension in my left leg which also undergoes a lot of knee problems.
If so, is it possible for me to fix my hip alignment by exercising and retraining muscles and how?

Hello, I’m in the same boat as you. I have uneven hips, one hip 1 inch higher than other. I have alot of lower back stiffness, and pain and stiffness in hip of longer leg. Actually don’t have on leg longer in reality, but uneven hips causes the left leg to be longer because of hip position. My left knee is also affected by it. I finally had enough of it. So my GP sent me to a joint and bone doc. He checked me for all those diseases of the joints, like RA, and Lupus. Came back negative on blood test. He said it’s all mechanical because of uneven hips. The answer he said for me was to go to see a physical therapist. The PT will work with me to give me good stretching and exercises to help. Also, if a person has one leg longer, you will need a heel lift in shorter leg. That will be what will probably help the most, is what the bone doc said. That way I will be walking around with both legs hitting the ground evenly. It will help take stress off the back and hips, and also help the knees too. All of those joints are effected by uneven hips. So if you haven’t yet done so. I would go to your GP doctor, and see if he would recommend a good physical therapist, and he or she will help get you straightened out. Probably check your leg length differences and get you a heel lift, and give you some unique exercisings. I’m starting the PT this week, and getting my heel lift too. I can’t wait, hope it will help me. I’m tired of the lower back pain, hip, and knees.Hope things get better for you. Pain is no fun. Expecially when you are just 36, and feel like you are ready for a nursing home (ha). Anyway, hope you get feeling better soon.

I had back pain in the 9th grade. It went away in a couple of weeks. Then in high school I had a shooting pain down my left leg and my leg was totally numbed. I took some pain meds and went away. I have been told I have uneven hips back in 2016. I have been in a car wreck my sr. year in high school. I moved away and in 2018 I hurt back from moving. Found out I had degenerative disc disease and had 3 major surgeries. Now I have chronic lamienactomy disectomy sydrome and chronic osteoarthritis. I also have chronic lumbar radicoplathy. I now have chronic pain below my scar, across lumbar area, skin hurts really bad, down the side of my hips, buttocks are tender, numbness in back of legs, numbness in feet, bottom of feet feels like they are swollen, and hands/arms have pain by certain movements. The sides on the outside of knees (which is the SI nerve roots have gotten better but really sore when you rub them after my surgeries). I used to be on a walker and almost in a wheelchair. After my last fusion (L4-5), I noticed am more stronger but now I have chronic sacrolitts and lamientcomy disectomy syndrome. I am going to try a morphine pain pump trial. I tried the spinal chord stiumlator trial and it did not help. Can anyone give me suggestions.

I read your article and could of sworn that it was something I had wrote. I’m 36 as well and have uneven hips. I thought it was from an accident but I remember now that I was pigeoned toed and had to wear corrective shoes as a kid. I then needed to wear inserts into my shoes. its always been painful to me to stand for a long time. walking, sitting, lifting, etc is a problem for me in everyday life.

Hey… I got some z-coil shoes and I went to the Mayo Clinic. I went through the trials of the spinal chord stimulator and pain pump. Did not really help and I developed spinal headaches that were severe. I had to call 911 the day after I got out of the hospital and the ambulance had to take me to the hospital. It was bad. The Mayo Clinic – main doctor I saw said I had flat feet and I needed shoes that had an arch in them. I went to Foot Tech in Lubbock, TX with my mom and I just happened to ask them about the shoes if they had an arch in them. He said no and found some arch molds. I have to go back this weekend to to have him raise them up a little more. I can stand a little longer than one minute but does not help with the pain. I also joined a gym on Monday and I got in the endless pool twice today. Thanks for the tips. I recommended Mayo Clinic to everyone who is in pain or having health problems. They were really good doctors and if they do not know what is wrong they will put you through test in which they think you need. I went to the one in Scottsdale.

OMG! I have been walking around since 16 with this same problem and I am now 24. I too have had enough of this. My sleep has been effected due to lower back pain, my hip on my right side bruises all of the time because it feels and looks as though my hip bone is protruding through my skin. Because of this, I walk with a limp, my longer (left) leg is always sore, and when I try to stand for longer than a few minutes I get frustrated because I can’t seem to do it comfortably at all! Both of my feet point out toward the right when I walk, sit, and stand. Also, to compensate for my Right hip being higher than my left, My left shoulder sits higher than my right to compensate on the spinal chord. I can’t even hold a phone to my right ear because of this. When I lift, my left arm extends further out, and faster than my right. This has caused so much stress and frustration for me I don’t even know what to do with myself. Do Heel lifts really work? And when you don’t have them in, then what? Are there any permanent solutions?
