Baker's cyst..pain on knee squat?
I hope someone can provide some insight for me from your experience. I am going to begin a public safety training academy in 3 months. While I passed the medical screening, I was aware of a slight nagging pain I would get off and on behind my kneecap about halfway between a squat and stand, so I went to my personal Dr. My doc thought it was chondrmalacia (sp?). Xray=neg. MRI said Baker’s cyst,(even though I feel no bulge or radiating pain) and I am awaiting approval for an orthopedic exam. I’ve read that Baker’s cyst is a symptom of an underlying joint problem.
Have any of you had this? If I undertook the demanding regimen required of this academy, ie: running hard on pavement for 26 weeks, am I likely to blow out my knee? For what it is worth, It never hurts during or after exercise. Oh, BTW I’m 48 yrs. old.

For several months I have not been able to squat because of pain and stiffness in the back of my knee. I cannot pull my heel up to touch my butt with this leg. During this time, I trained for and ran the Boston Marathon (4/15/02)with the pain and stiffness getting no worse. I never had any pain while running except when trying to extend my leg such as jumping over a fence. This week I went to the Ortho doctor, had an MRI and was diagnosed with a slight tear in the meniscus cartilige. Scoping to trim the cartilige is an option. The pain in the back of the knee while bending it is caused by fluid being forced through the tear, and this fluid also keeps the leg from bending. However, with no pain while running, walking or other acivities, I think I just might live with this for a while, and hope it heals. It seems to be getting better post-marathon since I cut back on mileage to recover from the race. Also, my wife has been gracious enough to vigorously massage quads and hamstrings to hopefully speed up healing. The doc said no rush to scope it if the knee is not locking up or causing other probelms. I wonder what the likelihood of this healing on it’s own? By the way, I am a 50 year old male, and also suffered no swelling (bulge) or radiating pain.
