ANKLE PAIN
(3 discussions)
I have been having pain on the inside of my upper ankle and it continues up for several inches. I had been running about 6 miles a day 4 days a week but only at about 5.8 mph. The pain had become too intense to run, so I tried walking briskly (4.6 mph), for 5 miles. That also got to be too painful, so I have tried swimming which doesn’t seem to bother it as long as I do the breast stroke. The pain is constant but minimal when I walk normally and doesn’t hurt at all when I am sitting.
Can anybody tell me what my problem is? I have had a stress fracture previously but this is in a totally different place. I really want to get back to running, it’s the only thing that helps me keep my weight down.

This sounds like the course of the posterior tibial tendon, and you may have posterior tibial tendonitis. A good test is an inversion stress test. If this is positive, you may have PT tendonitis . The dangerous thing about PT tendonitis is: If you continue to push the issure, you can rupture the PT tendon and develop a significant flat foot. You may want to visit our site and look into PT tendonitis further at http://www.podassociates.net

I don’t think so. It hurts just above the very edge of the ankle bone closest to the heel and proceeds up several inches. Flexing my foot is uncomfortable, but walking for any period of time, even at a normal pace will cause pain after a short period of time, and any type of running is impossible without severe pain.

Could it possibly be an achilles tendon problem?
