Post Right Ankle Bone fracture & Torn ligaments injury

I am a trainee sports therapist. In class this week I was presented with a basketball player, (male), who had fractured the medial right ankle bone and torn a few ligaments around it back in March 2001. He had been in plaster for approx 10-12weeks post injury and then received physio for about 5 weeks after that.

Movement in all planes is restricted compared to the left foot. Also, this injury takes on a dull ache for a while post play. This guy had extraordinarily tight ligaments to his toes ; meaning all his toes are held in a permanently bent position.

I used a wheat pack to warm the area before commencing corrective massage, effleurage, petrissage, frictions with his foot moved in all directions to relax surrounding worked muscles. Then some NMT and finished by icing the injured area.

Anyone have any good suggestions as to how I might have improved this treatment and how to proceed further with his treatment programme?

Cheers. D

sounds like your on the right track, the cross friction will help alot, try using a hot water tub (bucket) instead of the wheat pack, youll get better circulation from that. ultrasound, a stretching/proprioception routine would help the player, and an extremity chiropractor would help regain the range of motion.
