Ruptured Hamstring

(2 discussions)

My semimembranosus hamstring fully ruptured on me a few weeks ago. Instead of tearing from behind the knee, it tore off the sit bone According to the surgeon, it cannot be reattached. Does anybody know just how much this will permanently affect my my running ability, both distance and sprinting? As of right now, I have approx. 25-30% of my eccentric strength (negative movements). My physical therapist hasn’t really given me a straight answer. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

My hamstring fully ruptured about 17 months ago. It was not properly diagnoised. I just saw a surgeon, who by the way has done the surgery, but did not know how successful mine would be because of the time that has passed. I would advise you to get the surgery as soon as possible. If you want the number of the surgeon that I saw let me know.

I had a similar injury 6 months ago. I tore both semimem and semiten from the ill tuber. I was fortunate enough to have an operation to reattach the problem. I was advised that if I didn’t have the operation that I would struggle to ever regain the last 10-20% of strength and hamstring power back. It will heal in time but you will struggle if you are looking to do anything competitive.
