Back of knee tightness
I’m getting a ‘tight’ feeling in the back of my left knee and some stiffness. I’ve been off running for a couple of weeks, but did a sprint triathlon last night ending with a 5k run. The knee was Ok during the event having been thoroughly ‘warmed up’ on the bike leg. However this morning the tightness is back and I feel that movement is restricted. There is no ‘bakers cyst’ size swelling but there is some sponginess in the back of the knee. It feels like the source of this is ‘deep’. I’ve been icing, but what could be the source of the damage and what sort of long term solutions exist?
By the way I’m 40-something and my knee is probably a prime candidate for over-use. It cracks eg when getting up from sitting and I’ve had patella pain from time to time, but this latest problem is different. I’m planning a visit to a clinic but would like to have some idea how bad this injury is. I can’t run or train at the moment and want to get back asap…..

Does the pain feel like you the tendon coming off the hamstring that run behind your knee is tight, or like you have pulled or tightened you hamstring. If so, see the site about a pulled hamstring, basically it is rest until is clears up. I have been battling this problem for the last couple of weeks. I found the source of my problems are related to my seat height on my bike. When I got back from Ironman Coeur d’Alene, I set my seat about 2mm too high. It caused all kinds of pulled tendons and liagment problems behind my knees. I lowered the seat, took some time off and I am back at running again. I have hit 30 mile weeks that last two weeks. I also noticed to for me trying to run really fast, ie at track, I can agreviate the injury.
Good luck and get better.
Hmmm…. hadn’t thought of that, I’ll do as you suggest and have a look at the website. I don’t feel pain in the hamstring – just this weird sensation behind the knee – but if that’s the problem then I would be relieved! – as it’s curable. I had just started to get into speedwork and high intensity ‘bricks’ (already on a late start to the season due to other problems last year that I had been recovering from) and that’s when this problem seemed to get worse. Thanks for your thoughts
