osgood schlatter

My son was recently diagnosed with osgood schlatter’s in both knees.
He has a terrible time and he does play alot of sports.
He is currently in football.
The Dr. seemed to think it really wouldn’t matter if he played. Just to use RICE therapy after the fact.
He has him taking two ibeprophen 3x a day.
We just recently got him knee bands that are suppose to take the pressure off.
He has now been having problems with his knee giving out but not forward it goes backwards not extremely but enough to cause alot of pain.
Is this normal with osgood? Or is this another problem altogether? The sports he is involved in are basketball, baseball, and football.
I read an article that stated certain excersise for the hamstring and quad would help but he does both those in warm ups for football.
What else can we do and refuses to give up his sports but will it cause more injury to occur? Thanks for any help or any information you can give me.
I also read that vitamin E and selenuim would help with OS.
Is this true?
I just can’t believe that this disease has been around for so long and no one really has found anything to really help.

chronic ankle pains

Hi! I’ve been having bouts of extreme pains in my ankles since my early teens.
I am not so sure what really precipitates them – usually running or hiking, but sometimes just a change in the weather or nothing at all, it seems.
I have to miss work sometimes, they last for 2-4 days at a time, anti-inflammatories only cut the edge off the pain and there are no associated swelling or limitation of range of motion per se. And in between attacks, my ankle feels totally fine. As to what caused it, I’ve always ascribed it to repeated eversions and inversions of my ankle in early childhood (went to catholic school, and went playing a little too roughly in those clunky black leather shoes every breaktime). Can you please give me an opinion as to my condition, and what I can do to prevent further attacks?
I am rather active – in the gym for both cardio and weights four times a week, and outdoors hiking or what not on the weekends. I am thinking of getting ankle braces (ASO support), and I would like to make sure they’ll be useful in my case before I purchase them. Thank you.

thigh muscle

(3 discussions)

I think I’ve injured my thigh muscle and I don’t know what to do for it.
I work out 2 to 3 days a week…karate..for the past 10 years. For about the last 2 weeks or so my left thigh muscle hurts.
It’s ok if I’m not moving.
When I go from sitting to standing or when I’m walking (let back pushing off) I have pain up high close to my hip. Also when I go to sit on the floor.
If I do a lot of walking then rest.. When I get up I have a slight limp until I’m warmed up.
What can I do to relieve some of the pain? Thank You.

hi–I have long-term bad posture-childhood sciolosis, etc.–I’m 52.
Surgergy, etc., is not warranted, according to my doctors. Can you recommend some sort of brace or support that might help? Thanks!Alan Simmons

anyone have same problems?

Hello… I just wanted to know if anyone had similiar problems as I do. Supposedly it is not suppose to be so major. I locked in and twisted my knee playing basketball. 2 1/2 mths later, it ONLY slightly got better which worries me since it took this long just to get a bit better. A week or two ago, I got an MRI and saw my Orthopedic Surgeon.. The MRI said I had mild chondromalacia in the patellofemoral joint and small joint effusion. No ligament or mensicus tears. Now, my OS said to just do some PT, ice, rest, and medication. I am not able to do any therapy yet, cuase I still feel a bad pain when I try to do some therapy and I was told it was from the swelling. So since I last saw my OS, I have been resting and icing a lot and taking medication. At times, I feel like my knee is 80% better, but then there are the random days where I feel the really bad pain I felt the first few weeks I was injuried, which makes me feel as if my injury is never gonna get better. I am not sure if this is how it is suppose to be during the resting and healing process, but I am getting worried. My OS said in a month it should get a lot better, but I just would like to know if I am going in the right path or not. I would like to early than late and make my knee worst. I just would like to know if anyone has been through this and if this is okay…

Strained Hammy

Hi, I strained my hamstring while running in November of 2011.
I continued to run for the next few months, taking 2 weeks off in June.
I started back again, not feeling too much pain, but when I would run fast I could feel it.
It bothered me so much in September that I took 4 weeks off of running, came back, and still bothered me.
I’ve now taken 2 months off of running, only doing hamstring curls of like 25 lbs to try and strengthen it, and I can still feel it.
What should I do?
