Hamstring/hip injuries

(8 discussions)

Im 16 years old, when i was fourteen i badly injured my right hamstring during martial arts practice, it hurt to walk, but nobody was there to advise me on how to properly recover. So i took a week off, and returned to practice and trained on through the pain, which was the worst thing i could have done, because now, two, going on three years later im still in pain because of this. my static flexability is fine for the most part, but my dynamic flexability has been greatly reduced, even jogging irritates my hamstring, going up stairs bothers me, anything where i contract my hamstring and then lengthen it again seems to bother me. every morning when i wake up, or if i sit around inacitve for too long ( even an hour can do it), i go to touch my toes and my hamstring literally cracks like a joint would. ive been out of martial arts and gymnastics trainig for two months already, also because i have torn cartilage in both my left and right hips. my left is almost better, my right doesnt seem to heel. just sitting down the wrong way can irritate my hips. ive gotten professional help, they told me that if all goes well id be better by this point in time, and for my hamstrings they told me to stretch… which i already do daily, so it did not help me much at all. i fear i wont be able to return to martial arts and gymnastics again because of these injuries. does anybody have advice or can anybody relate? thank you for your time, and thanks in advance to anybody who replies.

    hi there
snapping like that during stretching can sometimes the fascia covering on the muscle rather than the muscle itself. there maybe an adhesion or scar tissue on it and this limits the space th muscle has to move in. it also causes friction between the muscle and the fascia which is quite sore. soft tissue release or STR is a good way to relieve this and any injury specialist should be able to do this technique. also imbalnces between the quads and the hams leads to problems so check the flexibility of both.
    best of luck

I just registered for this forum, and reading all of these posts is difficult for me since I can feel the frustration some of you are feeling. I am in the same position. So sorry about your chronic injuries.

Anyway, I don’t know why your hamstring pops like I joint when you stretch, but it sounds like you have some adhesions and scarring in that tissue. Sounds like you have been to the doctor – have you seen the best physical therapist you can find? I recently switched and love the experience. Anyway, you may need to look into deep tissue massage – have you tried that already? A runner friend of mine had terrible problems with her hams for 2 years and got in with a sports massage therapist and now she can run pain-free. The process can be very painful, but it is worth the pain. It will help you heal. Just make sure to drink a lot of water, sauna or bathe when you can, and get plenty of rest. There are lots of things being freed up and entering your system when you have intense massage, and you need to do as much as you can to help that crap exit your system. Good luck.

hey, well it only turned out to be my left hip that had the torn cartilage (it was soft cartilage). my orthopedist gave me the option of letting it heal, or the arthroscopic surgery, so i went with the healing. Took a while, i dont know if its completley healed yet or not, i dont think it is. What i thought was my right hip turned out to be my tendon which was partially torn, and is still in the process of healing. It takes so long. My flexibility (static) is coming back as well as my dynamic.

Hello there. U have torn cartilage in both hips???I torn cartilage in my left hip summer 03 and only got to see the surgeon in October ’04. SInce, i have had a Hip Arthroscopy to repair the damage in my hip. I had this on 18th January 2005 and im still recovering from it. I havent played my main sport hockey since summer ’03. I can’t understand how your cartilage in your right hip has nearly healed, i would have thought an operation would be necessary to heal it. Regards your hamstrings, i reckon it just takes time to regain full felxibility. How are your hip snow, let me know asap!
