Hip trouble- please help!

(5 discussions)

Hi

I’ve posted before about my hip problems, which my sports medicine doctor diagnosed as snapping hip syndrome. I had been experencing a “popping-out” sensation in my hip as well as pain. I ended up having to quit track and stick to doing an eliptical and bike for a few weeks then I returned to running about three weeks ago after recieving a pair of orthotics to correct my flat feet. My podiatrsit said that the fact that my flat feet were causing my hip to be not alligned properly was what was causing the problem. I have been able to run three days a week for about 45-50 minutes without any pain when I strech my hips really well and take a prescription anti-inflamatory before hand. However, yesterday I when I went running the aching returned. However, I did not feel the “popping” sensation. Instead, my hips felt very weak and achy–not really painful if that makes any sense. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice as to what else I could be doing to prevent this problem, I’ve done pretty much all I can think of as far–icing, streching, cross-training, ect. Any advice would be much appreciated!!

Thanks for the help everyone, this problem is surely a pain (litterly!). I’ve never been to a chiropracor/osteopath, but it sure sounds like something to look into. I’ve tried stretching my IT band and glutes a lot more before I go running and that seems to help a little, however I still can’t seem to shake this one. Thanks again!

    hey there,
to my knowledge osteopaths will prescrib drugs, chiros wont… its also a location thing, in canada there are very few, if any, in europe i believe there are alot more. the ‘adjusting’ used can be the same, but some chiros use different techniques. you can email me your location, i might know someone good that is close to you. otherwise, look for one that uses ‘diversified adjusting’ active release is a great thing to, in my opinion (and only only mine) i would stay away from activator (for sports injuries) toftness, crainiosacral, thats all that comes to mind, they can be good techniques, but not for sports injuries. hope that helps some, let me know if you find a good one!

What’s the difference between a chiropractor and an osteopath?

I have had pain in my hip for a while. My physio thinks it’s my IT band, but after having a few people tell me they suffered similar pains and it was due to the pelvis being out of line, I figured it wouldn’t hurt just to get it checked out.
But I know from seeing many Physios, every Physio is different, some good, some not so good, I am presuming this will be the same with Chiropracters etc, and am worried I will waste money or more importantly be given a miss diagnosis.
How can you tell good one and which of the above do I need?
    Sarah.

sounds good, i am a chiropractor, and treat things like this successfully every day, osteopaths are hard to find, but a good sports chiro would be able to help alot (there are alot of different types of chiros, pick carefully) runnerchick, sounds like the muscles are weak from you time off, keep it up and you should be back to good. try a chiro, sounds like youve tried everything else! if your SI joint is locking, that will help you alot!

Well runner chick, I’ve had similar problems recently – pain when I try to stretch my legs.
I have been diagnosed by a very well respected osteopath in St Albans that my sacro-iliac joint is locked (either forwards or backwards). It is brought on by a sudden jolt. The ‘lock’ prevent the hip from full movement, thereby creating discomfort. Some gentle squeezing and rocking of the locality frees the joint and within a few days you’ll be back to normal.
My osteo says that he successfully treats several patients EVERY day with similar problems. Trouble is, he’s the only guy I know who can diagnose it!
Lay flat on you back naked on the bed (no I’m not being rude) and put one finger on each hip joint. If one finger is closer to your chin, then you could have the problem. You may need someone to check for you as it is difficult to see yourself!
    Best of luck.
