Knee injury (again)

(4 discussions)

I injured my knee 6 days ago while walking down some stairs (I was heading outside to do some running when I mis-judged the step, went down one step and twisted my right knee over towards the left).
Almost instantly afterwards, a dark purple bruise appeared on the inside of my knee, and a small bruise on the outside although I didn’t come in contact with anything. My knee hurts when I’m walking up steps, it’s stiff most of the time and has now started to sting (like a graze does), although there was no cut of any kind. I can bear weight on it, but to walk the joint is so stiff that at times I find I’m limping.

I went to the doctor today, who thinks its a soft tissue injury, but all she could tell me was not rest it (I only rested on the third day as that was the only day I had off work since) and to move it to stop it stiffening.

I am on my feet all day, and was starting to train for a charity race in the early summer, so I really need a way of healing this quickly…. any suggestions?

    YIPEEE got it sorted!

Just joined a new running group, and the coach suggested getting my running gait assessed at the local running shoe shop.

The shop specialist discovered my feet roll in (due to high arches), and told me it was 99% likely that I suffer from runner’s knee as a result of this.

Bought a pair of trainers with supports to stop my feet rolling inwards, and since I’ve been using those when running, the pain has vanished entirely! To check it was these, I did try running in my old trainers, which caused the pain to re-occur, so I’m totally sorted now

    So much for doctors!

(and I managed to do the charity race last weekend with no problems at all )

my money would be on a tear of one of your outside ligaments (MCL??). maybe only a partial tear. in any case, will heal on its own provided its not entirely torn thru.

definitely, DEFINITELY, see a good sports
    doc……

    best, lifer

Forget GP’s – go and see a physio or sports massage therapist…sounds like you may have sprained the ligaments or damaged the joint capsule. (GP may be able to refer you to a physio) It will heal itself but they will make sure recovery is effective.
You do need to keep it moving. A physio or therapist can do some soft tissue release on the area which involves passive movement (or active if its not too painfull for you) in the effected area. This will help the soft tissues to mend correctly and for full range of movement to be restored
You could try some ice compresses or elevation to reduce any swelling still present. But it sounds like you are through the acute phase and need to get it working properly again.
    Good luck…

Since I wrote that last post, my knee has been a little easier to walk on, although I still can’t fully straighten it. I was prescribed some anti-inflammitories by the doctor, but really would prefer to not take them if there is any other way of getting my knee back to full strength.

    Any ideas?
