Scheuermann's disease

(2 discussions)

my 15yr old son, who is a yr round basketball player, was picked to play in a AAU league this spring, and to play on the Varsity team next yr, started to complain about lower back pain. we went to our chiropractor who sent us for an MRI and then diagnosed my son with scheuermann’s disease (hereditary disease, upper spine becomes rounded). the chiro seems to also see compound vertebrae fractures?? We are just 5 days into this, and are already confused/concerned about diagnosis/treatment. chiro stated poss of never returning to basketball. do you have any info on this and/or suggestions for treatment (orthopedic MD, pt, etc). please advise. thank you!

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your direction/advise. My family MD didn’t have much to say about it other than adv therapy. I wasn’t sure if an ortho MD, ortho spine spec was suggested…we are currently looking into several of the ortho spine spec in the area to get a 2nd opinion. I know chiro are good for many things, but in my exp, seem to “dig” for more than they should. And in this case, seems to pose the worst poss scenario for my son….thanks for your advice & time!

I would be very wary of what the chiro said. You son should be evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon with a specilization in backs. This way he can be properly evaluated, and then a course of treatment can then be decided on.
